Sebastian Matta
Original poster - Vintage Offset Poster by R.S. Matta

About the Item

Original poster, colored lithograph on paper. Signed on plate on lower margin at the center. Good condition, except for some foxing and stains on the left margin. Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (Santiago, Chile, 1911 - Civitavecchia, Italy 2002) After studying architecture, in 1934 Roberto Sebastian Matta moved to Paris, where he worked with Le Corbusier and came into contact with intellectuals like Rafael Alberti and Federico García Lorca. Here he also knows André Breton and Salvador Dalí and adheres to the surrealist movement, elaborating a painting focused on psychological morphologies. In 1944 Breton wrote: "Matta is the one who most faithfully keeps his star, which is perhaps on the best path to reach the supreme secret: the control of fire". Chilean artist extremely dynamic, in Scandinavia knows Alvar Aalto, in London Henry Moore, Roland Penrose and René Magritte, in Venice De Chirico. At the beginning of the Second World War, like many surrealists, he flees to New York where he will exert a decisive influence on the new leverage of artists such as Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky. He is removed from the surrealist group (later re-admitted), accused of indirectly provoking Gorky's suicide because of his relationship with the wife of the Armenian painter. Moving to Rome in 1949, it will become an important link between Abstract Expressionism and the nascent Italian Abstractionism.
