About the Item

Agam was born in 1928 in Palestine, the son of a Russian Rabbi. Learning to draw at a young age, he found a passion for art, and began his official studies at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. He then spent two years at the Eidgenossische Technische in Zurich, where he studied under Johannes Itten, before eventually moving to Paris to complete his studies. It was here, in 1953, that Agam held his first one-man exhibition with great success. It was the first one-man show in art history exclusively devoted to kinetic art. Eventually, his body of work would include vibrating and tactile elements, and manipulatable sculptures as well. Agam has gone on to become the subject of retrospectives at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others. His works are featured around the world, including in the National Convention House, the Palace Elysee (by order of Georges Pompidou), the Lincoln Center at the Julliard School of Music, the Wailing Wall, and the Holocaust Study Center of Emunah Women of America. Agam has also had many one-man shows in art galleries, including: Denise Rene Gallery, Paris (1956), MarIborough-Gerson Gallery, New York (1966), Gallery Denise Rene, New York (1971) and a series of one man exhibits all over the United States at the Circle Fine Art Galleries. In 2015, one of his paintings sold for $700,000, which was the highest price anyone had ever paid for a work by an Israeli artist. Then, in 2017, the Yaacov Agam Museum of Art was opened in his hometown. He currently lives and works in Paris, France.

  • "Fieldwork" Large 5+-Foot Original Woodcut on Paper by Roger Herman, Framed
    By Roger Herman
    Located in Encino, CA
"Fieldwork," an original woodcut on paper by Roger Herman, is a piece for the true collector. This spectacular woodcut cannot be properly communicated digitally – it is a far more impactful and meaningful experience in person. This work of art would definitely enhance most homes or professional settings, perfect for those who have an affinity for abstracts, Neo-Expressionism, modernist paintings, or postmodern art. This woodcut was printed by Hans-Fuss and published by the Graphic Arts Council at LACMA. Work is outfitted with custom, conservation frame. Art historian Howard Singerman's words from the December 1982 ArtForum Magazine: "...Herman's expressionistic style... with its roots in German Expressionism and the New York School, is previously painted. His mean colors, thick pigment, and quick strokes are not a direct record of emotion and activity, they are not painting outside language, but signs for that painting, for an emotion and an activity that are no longer available. The expressionist act is recast as romantic aspiration; in his inscription, Herman evokes painting's past and admits his need for its aura... ...Herman's distance even undermines the emblematic immediacy of his expressionism, which he uses to attain more distance still. Unlike the flattened, aggressive figures that push to, and threaten to push through, the surfaces of most new painting, Herman's figures are situated in middle ground and buried beneath the paint..." Artist Info/Bio: ARTIST BIOGRAPHY DOCUMENT IS INCLUDED Documentation: CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY IS INCLUDED About the Artist: Roger Herman, a German painter and ceramic artist, has become well known for the broad range of styles encompassed within his work across multiple mediums. Roger Herman was born in Germany in 1947, where he began his studies at the Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe. In 1976, he was offered a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which took him across the world to San Francisco. It was here, in California, that his career began to flourish. He started by creating paintings of phenomenal proportion, soon christened as the West Coast parallel of the 80s Neo-expressionist movement. It was highly referential work, drawing on his knowledge of art history, as well as his famed sense of humor. With loose, facile brushwork, his art is reminiscent of the figurative German painters who emerged in the 1970s—like Markus Lüpertz (who taught at the Kunstakademie), Rainer Fetting...

  • "1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, Framed
    By Tom Perkinson
    Located in Encino, CA
"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature. In the artist’s own words: “My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.” “Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.” Artist: TOM PERKINSON (1940-) Title: 1940 - A STUDY OF APPLES Medium & Surface: ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS (framed) Signed: HAND SIGNED AND DATED BY ARTIST LOWER RIGHT Year Created: 1987 Country of Creation: UNITED STATES Image Area Dimensions: 21 x 28 INCHES Frame Dimensions:* 31.125 x 37.125 x 2.25 INCHES *This work of art is being sold framed. Artist Info/Bio: ARTIST BIOGRAPHY DOCUMENT IS INCLUDED Documentation: CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY IS INCLUDED About the Artist: Tom Perkinson, born in Indiana in 1940, has become distinguished as a regional painter, known for his work grounded in the visually dramatic landscape of the Southwest. As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school. He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration. Influenced by early painters of the southern Indiana landscape...
