About Tony Shafrazi Gallery: Iranian-born Tony Shafrazi began his formal career as an artist at 13 when his parents took him to England to study, eventually graduating from both the Hammersmith College of Art & Building, and the Royal College of Art. Coming to the United States in 1965, Tony Shafrazi set out to introduce himself to Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by 1968, was teaching art, design and media theory at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In an odd turn of events, Tony Shafrazi became the art adviser to the Shad of Iran and began to assemble a collection of 20th century art on his behalf. This extended his reach further into the art world, and in 1978 he opened the Tony Shafrazi Gallery. Displaying artwork by such artists as Francis Bacon, Keith Haring, and David LaChapelle, the Tony Shafrazi Gallery would be an incredible place to begin or further a career in the world of professional art.
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Basquiat’s paintings now belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. In 2017, Basquiat’s Untitled (1982) notched $110.5 million at auction and became the most expensive artwork by an American artist to ever be sold.

- Raymond Pettibon 1980s illustration art (early Raymond Pettibon)By Raymond PettibonLocated in NEW YORK, NYRaymond Pettibon, "No Mag,'" 1981: A rare late 70's/early 80's Los Angeles Punk scene publication featuring several stand out illustrations by Raymond Pettibon Medium: Newspaper magazine, offset printed. Minor aging to cover commensurate with age & medium; otherwise very good condition; well-preserved. Dimensions: 14 × 11 inches (closed). Publisher: No Magazine, Los Angeles, 1981. Rare; unsigned from an edition unknown. Well-suited for framing. NO MAG: Los Angeles, CA, 1978 - 1985: Bruce Kalberg's No Mag brought a subversive art-driven perspective to early Los Angeles punk publications. Though only 14 issues were published, No Mag is considered, as Pettibon is, a seminal part of Southern California punk history. Catalogue MoMa, The Eileen and Michael Cohen Collection Raymond Pettibon emerged from Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, and his work still embraces a youthful edginess and sense of political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—which range from Marcel Proust and William Blake to the Bible—the artist makes cartoon-inspired ink drawings on paper which evoke the aesthetics of fanzines and concert flyers. Baseball players, trains, crashing waves, political figures, and comic book characters make frequent appearances, often accompanied by cryptic, ironic snippets of handwritten text. Pettibon has been the subject of solo shows at the New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Kunsthalle Wien. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Whitney Biennial, where he was the recipient of the Bucksbaum Award in 2004. On the secondary market, Pettibon’s work has sold for over $1 million. Alongside his fine-art practice, Pettibon has illustrated album art for Sonic Youth and Black Flag, among other musical acts.
