About the Item

Ben Shahn created this 1968 serigraph entitled “CULTURE” in black ink with red calligraphy. This is an UNSIGNED impression. Provenance; Shahn estate, private collector, The Old Print Shop. In “The Complete Graphic Works of Ben Shahn” (1973) by Prescott, it is noted that the edition is unspecified but he goes on to add “there are 73 known impressions with 9 unsigned.” The paper size is 26.5 x 20.5 inches. This piece is in good condition and printed on deckle-edge paper. The printed text reads: “CULTURE IS ACTONES, EPISODES, NODES, NODAL CHAINS, SCENES SERIALS, NOMOCLONES, PERMANIC TYPES, PERMACLONIC SYSTEMS & PERMACLONIC SUPERSYSTEMS. CULTURE Is Also PHONEMES, MORPHEMES, WORDS, Semantically Equivalent UTTERANCES, BEHAVIOR PLANS, & many other EMIC Things.” The satirical quotation is from ‘The Nature of Cultural Things’ by Marvin Harris. “The elegantly gowned 'bird' in this print is wearing what appears to be a traditional scholar's rode adorned with an ermine-like collar. The line connecting the eyes suggests a pair of wire spectacles. The hands, always conveyors of Shahn's thoughts, are piously folded, quite befitting someone who is about to deliver a learned definition of culture." - Prescott. BEN SHAHN (1898-1969) printmaker, painter, muralist, was born in Kovno, Lithuania, in 1898. He arrived in the United States in 1908 with his family and settled in Brooklyn. He was apprenticed to a lithographer after finishing elementary school at the age of fourteen. As an apprentice, he spent long hours of work grinding stones and lettering stones. He once stated that he made "thousands and thousands of letters." It is fortunate that he liked the history of alphabets because he would use them throughout his artistic career. Often the subject of a drawing became a print and/or a painting. Shahn believed in hard work and craftsmanship - qualities that would stay with him throughout his career.

Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), well known for his American impressionist paintings, also produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. From a young age, he was fascinated with drawing and birding – this keen interest continued throughout his life. His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years. During the early 1880’s Seymour Haden visited Boston giving a series of lectures on etching. This introduction to the European etching...
