About the Item

Framed 32 x 26 image 22 x 16 Charles Levier (1920-2004) He was born in 1920 of a French father and American mother in Corsica. He held a fascination with color and form that led him, at age seventeen, to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs for private studies. World War II came along and Levier served in the French Army in North Africa later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. He worked in a Post Impressionist style with Abstract Cubist influences. He also painted under the pseudonym Maurice Verrier. He is part of the mid century Ecole de Paris along with Bernard Lorjou, Andre Hambourg, Paul Augustin Aizpiri, Michel Henry, Jean Dufy, Claude Venard, Yvonne Canu and others. His paintings of Parisian beauties and boulevards are collected worldwide. Throughout the world are to be found his paintings in countless private and public collections. Among those who are collectors are Mr. And Mrs. Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Poniatoski, Mrs. Dan Topping, Mr. And Mrs. Dean Martin and many others. Provenance: Important Miami Beach estate that included many paintings and sculpture by Post Impressionist masterpieces and works by Latin American masters. Saul Rabino (1892-1969)Best known for his paintings and drawings of Jewish culture, Saul Rabino was a Russian-bornartist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. Born Saul Rabinowitz in 1892 in Odessa, Russia,Rabino studied art at the Russian Imperial Art School. During a brief stay in Paris, he continued hiseducation at the École des Arts Decoratifs. After mastering techniques in painting, sculpture, andlithography, Rabino moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a WPA printmaker during the1930s. He stayed in Los Angeles for the rest of his life, making work about political turmoil and theJewish community. During the 1940s, he drew allegorical images of war and the plight of Jewsin Eastern Europe. These political works, usually drawings or prints, are dramatic, symbolic, andemotionally rousing. He also made art portraying the scholars and religious leaders of the Jewishcommunity, including portraits that are more delicate than his political pieces and express anobvious admiration for the leaders of his community.
