Georges Braque
Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque

1958

About the Item

Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 is the image Braque designed for the cover of a book containing five poems by René Char in homage to Braque himself. In the lower left of the image lies a stylized black bird, a common pictorial motif in Braque’s oeuvre. Both the bird and the disembodied head to the left of the composition are facing to the right, which would have been in the direction of the cover’s opening. The parallel directionality of the bird and the head create a sense of movement and drama that emphasizes what lies within the pages of the book. Such interplay between the bird and head attests to the compositional balance repeatedly found in Braque’s work. Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 represents a beautiful collaboration between the visual arts and poetry. Created in 1958, Georges Braque Cinq Poésies en Hommage à Georges Braque (Five Poems in Homage to Georges Braque), 1958 is a color lithograph on Japon nacre. • L'efant aux biscuit (Child with Cookie)
    By Pierre-Auguste Renoir
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work): 1. By Fernand Léger
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...
