Samuel & Nathaniel were brothers, best known for their depictions of ancient castles and monasteries entitled 'Buck's Antiquities' and those of townscapes of England and Wales, 'Sea-Ports and Capital Towns'. LIttle is known about the brothers' lives. Samuel was born in Yorkshire and died in penury in London in 1779, he was buried in the churchyard of St Clement Danes. Nathaniel pre-deceased him, dying between 1759 and 1774.
This panorama is a fascinating insight into a long-lost, but strangely familiar, London. To the left is Westminster Bridge, framing the picture and to the right London Bridge completes the frame. A detailed key identifies 140 buildings and other features. Amongst the more recognisable items are Westminster Abbey, Horse Ferry (which is, indeed, a ferry for taking horses across the river with their carts and carriages), but presuamably somewhat redundant with the new (1750) bridge that coincides with the publishing of this print, the huge stack of used straw at Blackfriars awaiting being taken away by boat, the water wheel by London Bridge which generated power to pump water around the city (132,000 gallons per hour), and that the tide is clearly coming in (London Bridge caused a significant restriction in the flow of the tidal Thames such that the river water could be 6 feet higher on one side of the bridge than the other).

Samuel & Nathaniel Buck
Samuel Buck (1696 – 17 August 1779) and his brother Nathaniel Buck (died 1759/1774) were English engravers and printmakers, best known for their "Buck's Antiquities", depictions of ancient castles and monasteries. Samuel produced much work on his own but when the brothers worked together, they were usually known as the Buck Brothers. More is known about Samuel than Nathaniel. Samuel Buck was born in Yorkshire in 1696. After publishing some prints in that county he moved to London. With Nathaniel he embarked on making a number of series of prints of "antiquities", which consisted of ancient castles and former religious buildings in England and Wales. Starting in 1724, they travelled around these countries, and completed sets of prints for the regions of England by 1738 and for Wales between 1739 and 1742. These are commonly known as "Buck's Antiquities". During this time they also worked on a series of townscapes in England and Wales entitled "Cities, Sea-ports and Capital Towns", often providing prospects from multiple directions. Nathaniel was the first to die, sometime between 1759 and 1774. Samuel died on 17 August 1779 in London and was buried in the churchyard of St. Clement Danes. Samuel's later years were spent in poverty.

David Loggan (1634 - 1692) Pembroke College, Oxford (1705) Engraving 31 x 44 cm Loggan's view of Pembroke from the second edition of the 'Oxonia Illustrata'. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers.
