Alex Katz
Portraits: Jessica

2002

About the Item

Alex Katz uses outline drawings, called “cartoons”, as templates to transfer full size images onto the canvas prior to painting. Rendered in red chalk or charcoal on brown paper, the drawings are objects of beauty in themselves. The etchings that relate to this method of drawing are printed on handmade Japanese paper of a similar color, and their soft contours are created through soft-ground aquatint.
