About the Item
Created in 2019, this screenprint with diamond dust is hand-signed by Russell Young Russell Young, British (Northern England, 1959- ) in pencil on verso. This is a unique and original work.
This screenprint depicts the famous artist Andy Warhol against a backdrop of the commotion of a busy street in New York. The image is in grayscale, which perfectly expresses the distinctive color contrast of Warhol’s typical public appearance. Wearing mostly, if not all, black, the deep and dark shadows of Warhol’s clothing recede as the artist’s iconic shock of silver hair catches one’s eye, the bright white highlight becoming the focal point of the work. The dark shadows in the urban background further push Warhol to the forefront of the image. The juxtaposition of light and dark is also especially effective in Warhol’s face, serving to intensify his facial features and stern expression. Young, who is known for his portraits of famous figures in popular culture, is commonly compared to Andy Warhol, whose work features similar subject matter and similar techniques. Both artists have explored celebrity culture, the American dream, and screenprinting, and this image of Warhol acts as a tongue-in-cheek reference to this frequent comparison. The addition of diamond dust gives the work an opulent, glamorous feel that contributes to his commentary on popular culture and acts as a reflective, deflective layer between the viewer and the subject portrayed. The diamond dust diffuses the light around the image, contributing to the creation of an otherworldly atmosphere that maintains Warhol, the quintessential Pop artist, within a realm entirely his own.

Russell Young
Russell Young’s alluring, larger-than-life portraits of iconic cultural figures explore both glamorous American mythologies and their dark underbellies of crime, addiction, and death. His silkscreen paintings portray celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Kurt Cobain; the artist recontextualizes their iconic appearances in high-contrast palettes, often interweaving them with diamond dust to heighten their glittery, sensual allure. In other works, shellac drips and smears in a visceral, wound-like manner. Young has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Shanghai, Vienna, and Los Angeles. His work belongs in the collections of the Albertina Museum, the Cornell Art Museum, the Saatchi Collection, and the White House Collection. Celebrities including Brad Pitt, Elizabeth Taylor, and Kanye West have all bought his work. Young has also directed music videos, and in recent years, Dutch Golden Age paintings of flowers have become a frequent motif.

- Golden FridaBy Miguel Angel ReyesLocated in Palm Springs, CAScreenprint of Frida Kahlo by gay Chicano artist Miguel Angel Reyes. Signed, titled and numbered edition of 14. The sheet has nicely deckled edges (see second photograph). Miguel was born in 1964 in Colima, Mexico. One of Reyes's most vivid childhood memories is that of laying awake at night and listening to the sounds of people scurrying across his front porch as they hid in shadows and edged toward the fence, la linea, separating the U.S. from Mexico. Inevitably, Reyes's family made the trip themselves, deciding to stay in Los Angeles following one of their many “vacations (which meant going to Fresno to pick grapes for the summer). Besides Chicano cultural themes, his work also often includes homoerotic imagery. He was drawn to art early in his life, and graduated from Oits Parsons School of Design in 1987 with a BFA in fine art. After a short sojourn into the fashion industry following graduation, Reyes pursued painting, and today makes his living doing portraits, teaching, illustrating books and taking on occasional public art project commissions. Reyes' work incorporates expressionist brushwork and the saturated palette of the classic latin tradition. His work often incorporates homoerotic as well as Chicano themes. His art has been exhibited throughout the United States, and has been published many magazines. Miguel has created murals for the Los Angeles MTA, and his work is in the collections of LACMA print collections, Laguna Art Museum, Watts Towers...Category

In the third grade, he collaborated on a dinosaur mural with David Botello. In 1975, the two ran into each other after many years, and Healy and Botello co-founded what became the mural team known as East Los Streetscapers.
