Mussel I by Ondřej Oliva - Unique aluminium sculpture, figurative, seafood

2011

About the Item

Mussel I is a unique aluminium sculpture by contemporary artist Ondřej Oliva, dimensions are 20 cm × 49 cm × 26 cm (7.9 × 19.3 × 10.2 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This figure was motivated by three years' insight as an extravagance eatery culinary expert in the US, where the sculptor had been dazzled with the amounts, tones and scents of the prepared food, chiefly fish. In this work, Ondřej plays with shapes, organizations and sizes by making an enormous mussel through the juxtaposition and fractional superposition of a horde of more modest mussels. Ondrej Oliva, a Czech sculptor, draws inspiration for his works from both the natural and everyday objects that surround us. He often returns to familiar objects, such as foods, to produce new works that are rich in allusions and allusions. Ondej uses bronze or aluminium to give his works a long-term perspective, so the material selection is crucial.

In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets.
