Galanos Orange Silk Plunge Neck Bishop Sleeve Dress, 1970s

About the Item

James Galanos is widely revered as one of the integral designers in shaping the so-called “American Look”. His designs evoked a sense of casual and effortless elegance that made his garments coveted by women across the social spectrum from the first lady to the home seamstress. Featuring two of Galanos’ hallmark details at the time, this circa 1971 gown is done in a striking orange silk crepe with a comforting weight and regal bishop sleeves. As a testament to Galanos’ impact on American style, this dress was originally retailed at Marshall Field’s 28 Shop, a premier Chicago department store specializing in high end American fashion in the mid-1900s. The dress begins with a plunging V-neckline breaks at the bust and is met by a wide band of lightly ruched fabric that defines the torso and creates a slim waistline from which the gathered skirt exquisitely drapes down to the full-sweep hemline. At the hip, there are two meticulously set double welt pockets. The combination of smooth, ruched, and gathered fabric highlights Galanos’ masterful ability to create interest through simple means. This vibrant dress is not only eye-catching but comfortable and easy to wear making it an ideal contender for your next evening event. A version of this dress can be seen in the WWD clipping in the images below(dress on bottom left). • JW Anderson Silk Macrame Wood Beaded Fringe Dress Runway Spring 2019
    By J W Anderson
    Located in Boca Raton, FL
British designer JW Anderson is a trailblazer in the contemporary fashion market. With a vast array of unique collections and collaborations, Anderson’s aesthetic offers a much-needed reorientation of fashion by combining elements of timeless tailoring and artisanal handicraft. Following this vision for his Spring 2019 collection, this macramé dress is a perfect testament to design that is both simple and complex. The bodice of the dress is a combination of white and anthracite crepe de chine. The liquid fabric drapes beautifully over the shoulders creating a mock-shawl effect while the white and grey provide a sophisticated contrast. On one of the sleeves, the grey crepe is ruched while the other is split at the shoulder. This asymmetry provides additional interest to the very geometric lattice beading on the front of the bodice. The skirt is slightly pegged and is done from a neutral linen underlayer and a macramé overskirt that incorporates wooden beading in the mix of the knotting. The skirt finishes with a band of widely spaced fringe. The combination of raw edges, wood, and natural tones, paired with the modern silkiness of the grey crepe give this dress a refreshing and serene vibe. It can be worn for a casual day dress...
