Japanese Antique Muromachi Edo Wabi-Sabi Tokoname Art Pottery Jar Tsubo Pot Vase
About the Item
An absolutely stunning Tokoname ware stoneware vase/jar/vessel - produced sometime during the late Muromachi period (1336-1573 to early Edo Period (1603-1867). Tokoname-yaki ware is a type of Japanese pottery, stoneware, and ceramics produced in and around the municipality of Tokoname, Aichi, in central Japan. Tokoname is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Bizen ware). Pottery made in Tokoname dates back to the 12th century.
This particular piece, which features a gorgeous natural forming organic ash glaze and wonderful texture along with a rather unique and rare light blue glaze on one side (apparently made by using the method of covering the vase with sesame ash and sand) encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic (which is so revered and coveted in Japan) - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them.
Truly a beautiful and engaging piece and perhaps the perfect Ikebana vase. Would be a great addition to any Asian or Japanese pottery/ceramics collection or a clear eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
