Pair of Antique Japanese Flower Paintings by Yanagisawa Kien, circa 18th Century
About the Item
Pair of antique Japanese Nagasaki School paintings by Yanagisawa Kien (1704-1758), depicting classical ikebana flower arrangements. Each painted on silk in mineral pigments and bearing Kien's signature and seals.
Dimensions: (framed) H 73 cm x W 107 cm.
Kien was born at the residence of Kofu Domain during the Edo period. The domain lord of Kofu was Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a senior aide of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kien's father was high-ranked Samurai and was in favor with his lord, therefore, Kien was also given special treatment from the domain. From his early days, he received an elite education in literary and military arts. He studied literal things from illustrious figures such as great Confucianist Ogyu Sorai. He started studying the Kano style painting from 8 years old, though, he criticized the Kano style by suggesting it had lost its substance when he was 12 years old and instead became a disciple of Watanabe Shuseki of the Nagasaki style and studied Chinese painting styles.
