"Nude Archer in the Tropics, " Striking and Monumental Art Deco Bowl/Tray, France
About the Item
One of the most striking Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large (19" in diameter) bowl or tray depicts a nude Archer in a tropical setting replete with palm trees and cactus plants. To our knowledge this piece is unique, and was created by Samara for the famed Montieres pottery near Amiens, France in the 1920s. Named "Le Maîtrise," or "Mastery," the artists clearly had athletic prowess in mind when designing this piece, which is glazed in brilliant hues including canary yellow, ruddy brown and pale yellow-green. The bowl has a wide, flat interior and a steep 2-inch lip around its circumference.
