English Mid 19th Century Micro Tunbridge Glove Box with Makers Label Edmund Nye
About the Item
English tunbridge domed glove box with original maker's label Edmund Nye (1840-63). This micro inlaid domed glove box has various woods including rosewood, boxwood, mahogany and walnut. Edmund Nye was one of the foremost makers of tunbridge ware, his work is impeccable, the tunbridge inlay of flowers wraps right around the box on all four sides and the domed top. The theme is flowers of the garden. The intricate tunbridge work is enclosed with a delicate checkered stringing and set off with rosewood banding. . This box retains its original silk lining. The lid retains the silk straps which would have held the glove stretchers firm until needed. Edmund Nye worked in Tunbridge Wells from 1840-63, so this box retaining the original label, including his location of Tunbridge Wells, enables us to date this within the 23 year period of his residency and working in Tunbridge Wells.
