"Suzanne", Art Deco Paperweight in Green Glaze by David Seyler for Kenton Hills
About the Item
Rare, perhaps unique, this quintessential Art Deco sculptural object -- probably meant to serve as a paperweight -- was sculpted by David Warren Seyler for Kenton Hills Pottery in northern Kentucky. The female figure's long hair flows along her shoulders, and she is finished in a lovely, spring green glaze. The artist was born in Kentucky, but studied in Chicago and spent many years teaching at the University of Nebraska. Seyler was a modern day Renaissance Man, active in sculpture, painting, printmaking, graphic design, stained glass, weaving, and furniture design. Kenton Hills was founded. by William Hentschel, one of Rookwood Pottery's leading artists, in 1937, during the depths of the depression. Works from Kenton Hills were often equal to the production of Rookwood, but are much rarer.
