Stuart Devlin Silver Gilt Novelty Egg with Humming Bird

About the Item

A highly collectable and delightful silver gilt novelty egg containing a hummingbird by renowned silversmith and artist Stuart Devlin (Australian, 1931-2018) and dated 1977. Stuart Devlin created a range of silver gilt eggs each themed with differing content which would create a surprise for the beholder opening the egg. He also produced a large range of more utilitarian wears which, along with the eggs, have today become highly sought after and collectable. This finely and heavily made egg has a textured patterned finish and was made in a limited edition of 300 with this example being number 46. The base of the egg is mounted internally with a central gilded grass like plant with stems, some mounted with seed pearls and others with small round terminals mounted on a polished silver base and with a silver hummingbird mounted on a spring and feeding from the plant. The egg is numbered 46 to the base along with SD makers marks and London silver assay marks dating the egg to 1977. Provenance: From a small collection acquired in the UK Art Market In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.

  • Pair of Cloisonné Enamel Decorated and Silver Gilt Eggs
    Located in London, GB
Pair of cloisonné enamel decorated and silver gilt eggs Russian, 20th Century Height 7cm, diameter 5cm This duo of Russian antique eggs, artfully hand-fashioned from gilded silver and bedecked with painstakingly rendered cloisonné enamel, serve as proud emblems of the nation's rich lineage of gem-studded eggs. Crafted from sterling silver, as attested by the coveted '84' zolotnik stamp, each egg gleams with a seductive sheen, their interiors revealing the full splendour of gilded silver. The enamel floral arabesques, a hallmark of Russian craftsmanship, undulate elegantly across the egg's shell in an intricate ballet. These arabesques are arranged in a patterned circular band around the eggs, with larger circular, floral emblems taking centre stage in the body of the pieces. The bold blues of the enamel - in varying shades, from azure to navy - are offset by vibrant ruby red accents, making for an arresting visual contrast. Deeply rooted in a vibrant cultural tradition, these Russian eggs...
