About the Item
FREDERICK GEORGE RICHARD ROTH
United States, 1872-1944
Hissing Cat (1913)
Lost-wax cast bronze Signed in cast "Copyright 1913 by FGR ROTH / Gorham Co Founder ORP"
Item # 208NKJ18H
An exquisite lost-wax casting of Hissing Cat by Frederick G.R. Roth executed by the Gorham Foundry, it is a fine example with a nuanced overall dark-brown surface patina with auburn relief throughout the texture of the surface. The cat is beautifully captured with an arched back and tension in her body that is fully expressed in her withdrawn ears and sharp hiss. An example that highlights Roth's ability to capture the sensitive details of his subjects and highlight their personality with a carefully selected moment - here the coy irritation of this household cat is well-represented without any sense of aggression or tension in the image as she pulls in her head and looks up at her likely human offender.
The model is signed along the base and is cold-stamped with the foundry markings. The underside is filled with plaster and covered in an early green baize.
Measurements: 5 1/2" H x 3 3/4" D x 5 3/4" W
Condition Report:
Excellent original condition, no observed flaws; carefully cleaned and sealed in conservator-grade wax. Early green baize to underside with various labels attached.

- Rare American Sculpture of “Princeton Tiger” by Alexander Phimister ProctorBy Gorham CO.Located in Shippensburg, PAALEXANDER PHIMSTER PROCTOR American, 1860-1950 "Princeton Tiger" (1910) Dark-brown and autumnal patinated bronze signed in cast "AP PROCTOR 1912", "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS 0454 7" with copyright symbol captured from underlying mold, "79" and "PRINCETON TIGER" to raised edge cast circa 1912 formerly with Graham Gallery of New York (label affixed to underside) Item # 402KMP14C A very early casting from Alexander Phimster Proctor of his "Princeton Tiger". Modeled in 1908-1910, the original monumental pair of these were cast in 1910 and presented to Princeton University Art Museum by the class of 1879 (hence the '79 incised on the front raised edge). They were subsequently cast by Gorham starting in 1912 in two dimensions - 22 3/16" in total width and 9" in total width. The present example is the latter dimension and is cold-stamped "7", noting its very early production. It is finished in a nearly black overall patination that was relieved to show autumnal hues throughout, the tones together emphasizing the surface texture that is captured directly from the early mold. Note the extraordinary surface nuance and exquisite detail. The underside retains a label from Graham Gallery and shows remnants of the core material loosely moving within the void. Museum Holdings: Brooklyn Museum of Art [large version] Cleveland Museum of Art [9" version] Princeton University Art Museum [the monumental original pair] Measurements: 4" H x 9" W x 2 1/2" D Condition Report: Exceedingly good condition, no flaws. - Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul PhilippeLocated in Shippensburg, PAPAUL PHILIPPE Polish/French, 1870-1930 "Mischievous" Polychromed gilt bronze over original marble base signed in cast "P. PHILIPPE" signed in cast "i9.R / France" with foundry seal of A.G. Paris Item # 212MPH15S An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work. ARTIST Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia. Moreau" Item # 012SKP14W A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau". It is a complex model and a fine accomplishment for the foundry, the joints seamlessly flowing into one another without any obvious connections. The surface is chiseled with great care, resulting in fine detailing of the toes and fingers to include the wrinkles at each joint and texturing of the nails, crisp eyelids and flawless skin, gorgeous texturing of the garment...Category
