Indian Moradabadi Hathi Howdah (Elephant Carriage) Carrying Royals, 19th Century
About the Item
A brass Mughal Indian Hathi Howdah (elephant saddle) carrying a rider and two royals, adorned with enamel work, is a majestic and opulent representation of Mughal artistry.
The Hathi Howdah is a grand creation, showcasing the Mughal craftsmanship that flourished during its heyday. Crafted from lustrous brass, the elephant saddle and elephant is a substantial piece, both in size and artistic detailing. The base material provides a golden canvas for the intricate embellishments that adorn the entire structure.
Embellished with vibrant enamels, the howdah is a riot of color against the backdrop of brass. The enamel work features an array of hues, including deep blues, rich reds, and brilliant greens. These colors are carefully applied to create ornate patterns inspired by traditional Mughal motifs, such as floral designs, geometric patterns, and intricate vines.
The main section of the howdah is carrying two royals, seated.
The sides of the howdah are embellished with elevated panels featuring delicate pierced work and enamel detailing.
At the front of the howdah, a rider is positioned with authority, guiding the majestic elephant. The rider is adorned in traditional Mughal attire, with a turban and flowing garments. The brass is worked to capture the intricate details of the rider's attire, and the enameled accents add a touch of opulence to the overall composition.
The elephant itself is a testament to the artisan's skill, with every detail of its majestic form meticulously rendered in brass with enamel all over its body.
This brass Mughal Indian Hathi Howdah is not merely a functional accessory but a masterpiece that captures the essence of Mughal luxury and artistic brilliance. It stands as a symbol of the opulence and grandeur of the Mughal era, showcasing the fusion of art and functionality in a truly regal manner.
