1920s French Terracotta Bust by Saint-Clément Copy of Settignanos Laughing Boy
About the Item
A lovely terracotta bust of a child made by the famous french pottery producer, Saint-Clément. Undated but most likely from the 1920/30s, the bust was part of the "Terre Cuite d'Art" range (see markings on the base). This terracotta bust has been molded then enamelled in soft green, very typical of the period. The bust is hollow.
Although the bust looks very Art Deco in style and equally dates from this period, it is actually a replica of a late medieval sculpture by the Italian master Desiderio da Settignano (circa 1430-1464). The original bust is called The Laughing Boy and is made in white marble. Today it can be admired at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
The bust of The Laughing Boy has become famous because of its casual quality, very rare for a marble sculpture from the 15th century. The Laughing Boy stands out from all contemporary busts for its profound sense of mirth, which makes it almost a character study. The portrayal of the boy in spontaneous laughter is said to capture the essence of childhood. The sculpture dates from circa 1464 is Settignano’s last work.
Born into a Florentine family of carvers and stonemasons, Desiderio da Settignano was a sculptor whose work was greatly influenced by Donatello. Like the best artists of his generation, Desiderio rediscovered children as a central subject for sculpture. Greatly admired by Leonardo, his works, which include a number of portrait busts of women and children, possess an unusual degree of tenderness.
This vintage copy by Saint-Clément from the 1920/30s is in very good vintage condition. The bust has no chips, no cracks, no scratches or repairs. Some very minor signs of wear due to use and age. In order to keep the patina, the bust has not been cleaned. The are a few superficial stains on the head that can easily been cleaned if so wanted (see photos). There are also some areas that have a little darker patina due to manipulation and dust over the years (see photo of the back of the shoulders). I leave eventual cleaning decisions up to the new owner.

- Pair of Antique 1920s Arts & Crafts Hanging Lanterns in Metal and Handmade GlassLocated in COLMAR, FRA rare set of two matching antique lanterns (pendant lamps). The lanterns have been sourced in Northeastern France. These antique lanterns are made to be suspended. The structure of the lanterns is made of metal, most likely a copper alloy. The inside is made of slightly amber colored/smokey glass that has been mouth blown into the wrought metal frame in one single piece. When lightened, the light does not only shine through the body of the lantern but also through the small, circular glass sections on the top and on the bottom of the lantern. The lanterns are sold unwired. There is a hole on the top of each lantern for easy wiring, i.e. fit for a wire with a light socket. They can thus easily be adapted to any voltage (see photo).
