Hermes Bust from Olympia Cast by the Micheli Brothers, Berlin around 1900

About the Item

Beautiful sculpture. Verso cast inscription "Hermes from Olympia" as well as "Property of the Micheli Brothers - Berlin" Plaster cast after the antique Hermes bust, patinated on a grey marble gloss. The original Hermes figure, dates back to around 340 BC. And was probably a work of Praxiteles. The original is in the Museum of Olympia. Stylistically at the transition of Greek art from the late Classic to early Hellenism. Cast in the late 1900. Some scratches and chips in the locks of hair and at the back of the sculpture. A similar plaster bust of Hermes by Gebruder Micheli was sold at Sothebys, The Chanter's House sale, Devon, 24 October 2006, lot 94 for £4320.
