Canary Yellow Calcite Mineral Specimen – Rudny, Kazakhstan
About the Item
Although abundant, the many shapes, colors, and associations of calcite make for a seemingly infinite number of permutations. This allows collectors to have entire suites consisting only of calcite specimens where one is far different from the next. The Rudny area of Kazakhstan, specifically, is known for distinctive calcites with crystals that tend towards a light-yellow coloring. The most desirable examples are attractive, twinned crystals with nice translucence and definitive color. Sadly, fine examples have dwindled since its last major find (circa the 1990s). Since then, these distinctive calcites have become a sought-after specialty that many equate with the region’s finest mining era.
This example was recovered during the region's heyday. It features half a dozen golden, twinned crystals, characteristic of the locale. With their canary-yellow tone and lucidity, they take on a lovely glow with just a hint of light. They also have a lustrous sheen to their shapely, well-terminated forms and are wonderfully composed on their contrasting matrix in a curving, S- formation. The largest crystals have formed towards the top of the specimen and are accented by the smaller crystals that snake down the matrix. An aesthetic example from a limited locality, this specimen would make a great addition to any collection.
