Japanese Green Porcelain Mizusashi Water Jar by Contemporary Master Artist
About the Item
An exquisite masterpiece by highly decorated master porcelain artist of the Kutani region who remains active today in his mid-1980s. A long-time aficionado of the tea ceremony, the artist’s kiln adjoins a traditional tea ceremony room that he has named “Sen Shin An” (soul cleansing hermitage). Throughout the years, Yamagami has created numerous mizusashi and tea bowls for the traditional tea ceremony. His work is currently on display in the Multiversity Gallery of the Museum of Anthropology of the University of British Columbia.
Exceptional hand painted porcelain mizusashi water jar features an attractive floral pattern in shades of green and blue on a white background. With its matching lid, this piece is classified as a tomobuta (matching lid) type. The exterior palette is playfully repeated on the reverse side of the lid. Mizusashi is a lidded fresh water jar used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony to replenish the boiling kettle and rinse the tea bowls. First to enter and last to leave the tea ceremony room, the mizusashi serves as a focal point in the aesthetic scheme of an otherwise meditative and somber ceremony with a history that goes back more than ten centuries.
