Brown, blue and red glazed vase with gold plated silverplate mount

About the Item

This important vase with a gold plated silverplate mount was designed by Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846-1908) and executed by Herman A. Kähler, Denmark, early 20th century. The neck has repoussé ornaments in the Scandinavian arts and crafts style (skønvirke) and is marked TB for Thorvald Bindesbøll. The body has cow-horn glaze applied and saturated blue and brown enamels. Horn painting as a technique has deep roots in pottery history and was used at Kähler's workshop as early as in the beginning of 1800s. The demanding technique required a skilled and experienced painter to apply the colored slip (begitning) to unfinished items. A goose feather was placed at the tip of a hollow cow horn, which was filled with slip, and the amount was controlled by finger pressure. The vase is incised with the Kähler ‘HAK’ monogram.
