Lucie Rie, Uranium Yellow Flaring Porcelain Bowl, signed

About the Item

Lucie Rie (British/Austrian 1902-1995), a porcelain bowl of flaring form, uranium yellow glaze with craquelure and running manganese band to rim, impressed seal mark, 14.7cm diameter, 5.9cm high This bowl, with its slightly irregular shape, displays the soft, brilliant yellow uranium oxide glaze which was characteristic of Rie's work in the 1960s Born in Austria, Rie and her husband emigrated to England in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution, and she found a job working for the German emigré Hans Coper, who himself became an outstanding potter. They went on to exhibit their ceramics together, to great acclaim. The works of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper are now some of the most sought after studio ceramics. A major exhibition has just taken place at Kettle's Park, Cambridge, entitled LUCIE RIE: THE ADVENTURE OF POTTERY
