18th Century Dutch Delft Apothecary Medicine Jar

About the Item

A good Dutch Delft blue and white pottery apothecary jar marked P.AVICEMA and dating from around 1750. The jar, of cylindrical form stands on a rounded pedestal foot with a pinched top rim and slightly flared top. The jar is hand decorated with a blue and white banner to the body with a head, birds, floral designs and other stylized designs with a decorative border around the name P.AVICEMA possibly an indication that it was intended for pills inspired by Islamic philosopher / physician Avicenna The jar is not otherwise marked but contains a recent label indicating that it was part of 'The Smalle Collection, South Africa' . Although the jar is very good condition, the glaze is worn off around the top and foot rims.
