Early 20th Century French Hand Painted Faience Wall Platter from Quimper
About the Item
Decorate your kitchen or breakfast room with this important ceramic wall charger; crafted in Quimper by Henriot, circa 1920 the faience oval plate with blue border and a centre coat of arms of "La Bretagne" (Brittany), features four youngsters in a small boat fishing for a fallen hat. The large platter is in excellent condition and is signed on front and back "Henriot Quimper HC".
Prior to 1870, Quimper faience had no marks, signatures or back stamps of any kind. Beginning in the 19th century, the signature of the Faiencerie has been evolving with its history.
The symbol we use today symbolizes the "Quimper Brush Stroke" and was created from various calligraphy styles developed by our painters. For the first time in history, two Faienceries: HB and Henriot join together into a single, immediately recognized logo.
Each piece of Henriot Quimper pottery is signed on the back by the artist prior to the firing. This signature guarantees that the faience has been handmade in the workshops of the Quimper manufacturer. It inspires that it is not a copy but a true Quimper original.
