Fives-Lille French Majolica Artichoke and Asparagus Serving Platter, circa 1890
About the Item
From the Fives-Lille Faiencerie in France, a scarce Artichoke and Asparagus platter, circa 1890-1900.
Made of earthenware, the oval center is boldly glazed and shows the leaves and globe of the artichoke plant along with three asparagus spears. The wide border is formed of eight hand-painted cartouches showing flowers and butterflies. The cartouches are separated by powder blue scalloped moldings. The shaped rim is hand lined in burgundy. This large platter displays beautifully.
Fives-Lille was founded by the Belgian potter, Antione Gustave De Bruyn. He opened his pottery manufacture at Fives-Lille, in the northern part of France in 1864, and added majolica glazed wares in 1887. He was awarded the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
