North Staffordshire Oval Platter Transferware in the Blue Willow Pattern
About the Item
This blue and white porcelain oval transferware platter is from North Staffordshire in the "Willow" pattern. It is in wonderful condition and measures 16 inches wide by 12 inches high. It is marked. True Blue Willow must include several elements including two birds in flight, a pagoda or a teahouse, a fence, a boat, willow trees and Chinese pine trees. The European-produced China became assocuiated with the term Chinoiserie.
The Blue Willow design originated in England around 1780 with engraver, Thomas Minton. He sold the design to an English potter who mass produced it at a factory in Staffordshire. The pattern may look Chinese, but it was produced by hundreds of European pottery factories, and Blue Willow was not produced in China until the 1980s.
This platter has all of the requisite elements that conform with Blue Willow!
