Moccasins, Antique 1880s Arapaho Native American Plains Indian, Hide with Beads
About the Item
This pair of 19th century antique moccasins date to circa 1880 and are constructed of native tanned hide and sewn with glass trade beads in colors of green, white, red, blue and yellow. The primary design element of these moccasins are intricate patterns known as Buffalo Tracks, created to resemble the tracks left by buffalo hooves. The buffalo holds immense significance in Arapaho culture, representing sustenance, strength, and spiritual power. Buffalo hunts were a central aspect of Arapaho life, providing food, clothing, and materials for shelter and tools. Buffalo track beadwork serves as a visual representation of the tribe's connection to the land and their reliance on the buffalo for survival. Arapaho beadwork generally incorporates intricate geometric patterns, floral motifs, and symbolic imagery. Each design holds deep cultural significance, often representing elements from nature, tribal legends, or spiritual beliefs. Some common motifs include the morning star, thunderbird, buffalo, tipi, and sunburst. This pair also incorporates triangular elements that represent tipis (teepees). Each Moccasin measures approximately 4 ¼ inches (height) x 4 inches (width) x 10 ¾ inches (length from toe to heel).
The Arapaho (Arapahoe) are a Native American tribe historically based in the Great Plains of North America. Presently known as the Hinono'eino or Inun-ina which means "our people", they are one of the indigenous peoples of the Plains and have a rich cultural heritage intertwined with the vast grasslands of the region. Traditionally, the Arapahoe inhabited the area of present-day Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas, with some bands ranging further into Montana and Oklahoma. Their territory was characterized by the vast plains, rolling hills, and river valleys of the central United States.
