This, The George Nelson for Herman Miller, 1955 Catalog item 4743 is a significant piece of mcm furnishing. Let us tell you why. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1908, George Nelson studied architecture at Yale University, teaching for a short time before the Great Depression. In 1932, he won the Rome Prize and spent the next two years studying design in Italy. Returning to the states, Nelson sold his essays to Pencil Points and became an associate editor at Architecture Forum and Fortune magazine. After reading Nelson’s innovative book Tomorrow's House, then president of Herman Miller furniture company D.J. De Pree hired Nelson as design director. Nelson launched his first collection in 1947 and transformed the struggling company into a groundbreaking leader in the field. Nelson remained at Herman Miller until the mid-1960s, and was responsible for bringing Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard and Isamu Noguchi on board. In 1947, Nelson opened his own design studio, George Nelson Associates, Inc. which at one time employed over seventy people. The company’s work within corporate settings revolutionized the concept of branding and elevated industrial design to new heights. Throughout his career, Nelson continued to write critically about design across multiple planes, teaching and consulting until his death in 1986. This prairie-esque ala bauhausian simplistic yet stylish design epitomizes the mid century modern style of 1955. This particular unmolested stereo console is in equisite with original patina condition. Item: George Nelson Associates Stereo Cabinet, model no. 4743, Ca. 1955s manufactured by Herman Miller a hybrid of the "Thin-Edge" and "Basic Cabinet" series; "tawny walnut" case, satin chrome pull no. 1, aluminum legs, fabric mesh with Garrard turntable and Slimline High Fidelity speaker. Our modern updates replace the system components with audiophile type system 31 x 56 1/4 x 18 1/2 in. Note: Options for upgrades exist and can be upgraded and customized anytime after the purchase. This is currently configured with a new turntable and a sonos speaker sound system. Other configurations are available. In the past 2 years Groovy Wood Studios has acquired and sold more than 700 consoles in our store and on our various marketing channels. Someone recently told us that means it's more than all the other resellers on etsy… combined. That kind of growth was never our agenda, but the quality and delivery of audio excellence has never waivered. A few things we learned: Give the customer what they want. But we also have Bob from down the street, and Bill the schoolteacher too as great customers. They all rock! So every console we have is as individual as the buyer. We see to it. We are the only purveyors of mid century consoles with a full time showroom, gallery, listening room and event space in our downtown Mid Century Modern 3800 sq ft building. And we recently expanded our workshops into a large (for us..) 5000 Sq ft building to accommodate larger refurb space, larger wood refinishing space and larger shipping facilities. It had to be done. George Nelson

Architect, designer, and writer George Nelson was a central figure in the mid-century American modernist design movement; and his thoughts influenced not only the furniture we live with, but also how we live.

Nelson came to design via journalism and literature. Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Yale in 1931, he won the Prix de Rome fellowship, and spent his time in Europe writing magazine articles that helped bring stateside recognition to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Gio Ponti, Le Corbusier and other canonical modernist architects.

In the 1940s, Nelson wrote texts that suggested such now-commonplace ideas as open-plan houses, storage walls and family rooms. D.J. De Pree, the owner of the furniture maker Herman Miller, was so impressed by Nelson that in 1944 — following the sudden death of Gilbert Rohde, who had introduced the firm to modern design in the 1930s — he invited Nelson to join the company as its design director. There Nelson’s curatorial design talents came to the fore.

To Herman Miller he brought such eminent creators as Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, and the textile and furniture designer Alexander Girard. Thanks to a clever contract, at the same time as he directed Herman Miller he formed a New York design company, George Nelson & Associates, that sold furniture designs to the Michigan firm. Nelson's studio also sold designs for clocks to the Howard Miller Clock Company, a manufacturer that was initially part of Herman Miller before it became an offshoot that was helmed by Howard Miller, D.J. De Pree's brother-in-law.

Nelson’s New York team of designers (who were rarely individually credited) would create such iconic pieces as the Marshmallow sofa, the Coconut chair, the Ball clock, the Bubble lamp series and the many cabinets and beds that comprise the sleek Thin-Edge line.

For dedicated collectors, as well as for interior designers who look beyond “the look,” there is a “cool factor” inherent to vintage pieces from George Nelson and others. Nelson was in on it from the start, and it’s valuable to have a piece that was there with him.

But still, as is evident from the offerings from dealers on 1stDibs, in any of the designs, in any iteration whose manufacture Nelson oversaw and encouraged, there are shining elements of lightness, elegance, sophistication — and a little bit of swagger. George Nelson felt confident in his ideas about design and didn’t mind letting the world know.
