19th Century, French, Leather Throne Chair
About the Item
Magnificent Basque regionalist armchair from the end of the 19th century in leather and solid oak. Significant wear of the leather on the seat, beautiful patina. The structure of the seat is magnificently sculpted, it gives this armchair presence due to its imposing format, it literally sits at the end of the table .
In the 19th century, from 1830, the fashion for the "cathedral" style saw the birth of many copies of Gothic-style furniture. Furniture merchants industrially produce chests, credenzas, sideboards and other cathedral chairs drawn from their imagination. This neo-Gothic craze was favored by the great architects of the time such as Violet-le-Duc, who enthusiastically restored France's Gothic heritage.
The beauty of Gothic furniture comes from its rich satin patina with age and the quality of its carved patterns.
