Minimalist Dutch Wenge Benches, Netherlands, Ca 1970s
About the Item
This understated, stylish pair of benches are versatile in their simplicity. They can be used as tables, or, thanks to their very sturdy constructions, can also easily be used as seating.
These benches are completely veneered in wenge hard wood, which also defines their overall visual impression. The honest use of materials, clear construction and lack of decoration define this pair. Clearly preoccupied with functionalism, the rectangular bodies have confidently straight lines with impeccable joinery. Due to their length, width and height dimensions, these benches can be used in different ways; as benches in the hall or at the foot end of the bed or even as a coffee table. The main characteristics of modernism can be clearly observed in the design: clean, straight lines and a masterfully crafted structure. The large surfaces allow the versatile shades and patterns of the wood to stand out. The open fronts prevent the design from looking heavy and instead create a stylish, modern look. The wenge wood is spectacular and the understated design allows it to truly stand out.
The timeless design and clear design language makes this pair of benches a true classic. These characteristics make them able to fit in a minimalist modern decor just as well as in a more wabi-sabi Axel Vervoordt inspired interior.

- Jean and Sébastien Touret Brutalist Oak Bench, France, 1970sBy Jean Touret, Sébastien TouretLocated in Utrecht, NLThe term brutalism — which derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” — was originally coined to describe an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity. Similarly, in furniture design Brutalism inspired designers to create models with the same look of strength and style. This rare Jean & Sébastien Touret...Category

- Axel Einar Hjorth "Utö" Bench, Sweden ca 1935By Axel Einar HjorthLocated in Utrecht, NLThis “Utö” bench is from the Swedish designer, Axel Einar Hjorth’s Sportstugemöble furniture line. This bench has a rather simple, yet well-thought out design. The frame is made of pine, mixing the aesthetics of rural, traditional handcraft with international modernism. Produced by AB Nordiska Kompaniet, this bench belongs to Hjorth's line of modernistic cabin furniture from the 1930's. The seat of the bench is thick and robust, with an oval shaped pine board, assuring sturdiness and stability. The symmetrically carved back with a gap in the middle offers comfort and functionality. The four tapered legs of the bench follow the shape of the backrests on both sides, accentuating the geometrical aspect, and highlighting the symmetry of this piece. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 54.92 in W x 18.7 in D x 31.3 in H ; Seat height 15.55 in 139.5 cm W x 47.5 cm D x 79.5 cm H; Seat height 39.5 cm Literature: Christian Björk, Thomas Ekström...Category

- Oak Bench with Mortise and Tenon Joinery, Europe ca 1950sLocated in Utrecht, NLIn the past year, seating benches have become a popular choice in home décor. Of course, these benches’ primary purpose is to provide a convenient and comfortable place to sit. However, a bench, such as this beautiful wooden model, can also be used as an interior decorative element. All major interior design companies have released their own bench models, but it is hard to live up to the wooden pieces created in the mid-century. This oak bench is dominated by two elements: its material and the master joinery techniques. Without a doubt, the mortise and tenon...Category
