Pierre Chapo Set of Four 'S11' Chairs in Cognac Leather and Elm, France 1960s These are a set of four dining chairs designed by Pierre Chapo, model 'S11', crafted in France in the 1960s. These chairs are an early edition and are made of solid elmwood. They feature a refined cubic design that is both sleek and contemporary in appearance. The seating and backrest are made of cognac leather, which adds sophistication while providing a comfortable seating experience. These chairs are remarkable in terms of their detail and craftsmanship. The wood joints are impeccably constructed, showcasing masterful workmanship. The 48 x 72 assembly ratio was used to create these joints, resulting in a structurally solid and visually appealing piece. The thick saddle leather has a light patina that shows interesting stitching. Pierre Chapo was an architect trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was born into a family of craftsmen and had an interest in contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. His work was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's balanced lines, Corbusier's research on proportions, and Bauhaus's ideas. Three principles that motivated Pierre Chapo in his work were 'material, form, and function.' He preferred to use elmwood as his material of choice and measured his furniture using the golden ratio. Chapo founded Société Chapo in 1957, which was a design workshop and gallery where he showcased his own creations along with other great designers of that period. He died in 1987, but until his last day, he kept designing and working.
