Vintage 1950s Joseph-André Motte 771 "Tongue" Chair for Steiner

About the Item

The model 771 chair is more commonly known as the "Tongue" chair after the shape of the chair's seat. This vintage 1950s Joseph-André Motte chair was found with tired fabric and we had it reupholstered in Maharam's Mohair Supreme. The slate colored mohair reads blue/gray in daylight and a gray/charcoal in low light making it versatile throughout the home. The luxe mohair adds a sophisticated touch. The chair retains the original Steiner label.

  • Vintage Paul McCobb Shovel Chair 1950s
    By Paul McCobb, Winchendon
    Located in Saint Paul, MN
Paul McCobb has been a bit of a dark horse in the world of Mid-Century Modern. Due to an early passing, McCobb didn't see the longevity of some of his modernist counterparts. But despite a short career, his body of work is impressively large. Known best for his Planner Group series for Winchendon Furniture, the shovel chairs were introduced along with a wide range of seating and storage options. The shovel chairs are less common that the windsor-styled chairs and have since become sought after by collectors. This examples had been in a tobacco finish with dark staining on the seats. They have been refinished with a black lacquer (an original factory option for the chair). Seen pictured with a Half Nelson lamp...

At the École des arts appliqués à l'industrie (now ENSAAMA), he studied under René Gabriel, Louis Sognot and Albert Guénot, graduating top of his class in 1948. He then obtained his first collaboration with the Bon Marché art studio. One of his first models, the Tripodes...
