Brazilian Rosewood Sofa by Liceu De Artes e Officios, Midcentury

About the Item

Two-seat sofa designed by Liceu de Artes e Oficios in solid rosewood, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1960s. The piece has been recently refinished and newly upholstered in natural leather. Liceu De Artes & Oficios was established in 1873 by a group of elite coffee aristocrats that pretended to train skilled labor for possible future industrialization of Brazil. Seven years after, the institution changed completely the proposal, really becoming a school of craftsmanship, occupying a building design by Ramos de Azevedo and been directly also by him. The teaching models become to follow the European Arts & Crafts Schools and the institution focused on design, casting, lock-smithing, carpentry, and other fields. During these golden years of production many sofas, armchairs, credenzas by many Brazilian young designers were manufactured and commercialized by Liceu de Artes e Oficios. Due to the high level of craftsmanship in modern drawn, it's common to see Liceu pieces being (wrongly) tributed to Joaquim Tenreiro.

Designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, modern Brazilian sofa, iron, and velvet. Brazil, circa 1950s. Shell or "Concha" sofa is made of iron and recently reupholstered in yellow velvet by the experienced craftsmen in our team. The upholstery was chosen considering the contemporary proposal of the piece. The sofa features a comfortable seat, clean design, and freedom of user movements and is constructed in a frame with metal rods elegantly positioned to give strength to the piece, a common trait of designers. The buttons velvet coated between seat and backs were used, by the designers, for an excellent velvet finish, and the restoration proposal was to maintain them.
