Ikea Sofa by Bengt Ruda, Early 1960s

About the Item

Sofa by Bengt Ruda for IKEA. Sweden, 1961. Original soft jute-like, textured weave upholstery in key lime and avocado stripes. The durable fabric is comfortable to the touch, and the solidly built frame remains in strong, sturdy condition, as well. Original tag present. IKEA first began working with designers in 1957, and Bengt Ruda was the first to be engaged. Ruda studied at Konstfack, the Stockholm School of Art, Crafts and Design, and began his career as a glass designer at Orrefors Kosta Boda, a Swedish company specializing in the production of high-quality glassware. He worked for the company for over 20 years, designing numerous collections of glasses, vases and other glass objects. In addition to his work in glassware, Bengt Ruda has also worked as an industrial designer for various Swedish companies, including Electrolux and Ericsson. He has designed products such as household appliances, telephones and communication systems. Bengt Ruda has received numerous awards for his work, including the Swedish Design Prize on several occasions. His work is exhibited in museums around the world, including the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design in Stockholm and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
