Charles 1st English Jointed Stool Oak, Early to Mid 17th Century, circa 1630

About the Item

This is a genuine period English oak stool, dating to the early / mid 17th century, Charles 1st Carolean period, circa 1630. Genuine original stools from this period are rare. This stool is hand made of solid oak with pegged mortise and tenon joints. The top is thick with grain running side to side, chamfered edges and pegged to the top rails by 4 x dowels giving a deep overhang. Top side rails have deep hand carved arcaded or nulling, based on a series of small concave arches. The four legs are turned with classical balusters and splayed front to back for extra stability and end in turned toes which are very worn as expected. The lower stretchers are jointed and pegged. These original stools were made quite high of 23 to 24 inches, this one being 23.25 inches. Later reproductions and 19th Century copies are generally much lower in height. This stool has an exceptional natural patination and depth of colour, particularly to the legs, which one would expect with about 400 years of use, wear and repeated polishing. This stool has plenty of honest wear and shrinkage that you would expect to see on a genuine early stool like this one. However it is very sturdy and usable. For similar stools and details see; Oak Furniture by Victor Chinnery published by Antique Collectors' Club British Antique Furniture by John Andrews - same publisher.- Page 280.

  • Handmade Oak Stool with Leather Strap Top, Arts & Crafts Late 19th Century
    Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good handmade stool with a well turned solid oak frame and a woven leather strap top, all dating to the Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century. The stool is made of solid oak. The frame joints into four legs with ring turned detail and with four jointed rectangular cross stretchers between the legs, making this a very strong construction. The seat top is made of interwoven reddish-brown leather straps which sit on fabric webbing below the leather and give additional support to the seat. The seat is finished off with four narrow leather strips that run along the lower seat edge, one on each side, that are secured by brass nail studs. The stool has developed a good patina from age and use and the reddish-brown leather has a deep natural mature shine, only achieved by repeated polishing and use over the years. This piece is made in the 17th century Jacobean style but we date the stool to the late 19th century, made in the English Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century. Please note the images are taken both indoors and outdoors in different light conditions. Notes on English leather topped seating Leather covers on English seating dates back to the middle ages and the 16th century. Mature leather seats can be as tough and polished as the wood of the frame itself. During the reign of Elizabeth 1st...
