French 19th Century Carved Walnut Louis Philippe Confiturier

About the Item

This rare and extraordinary hand-carved 19th century Louis Philippe confiturier, c.1860 is from France and boasts beautiful proportions. The step-carved rectangular top rests upon an apron with two drawers having a deeply-carved diamond-and-leaf door, retaining wood escutcheon and original key, mounted on steel barrel hinges and opens to reveal a single removable shelf. The sides have step-carved and inset panels and the whole rests upon a carved base and a pair of bracketed feet and rear block feet. This confiturier will make a bold statement in a kitchen or dining space! Confituriers like this one were originally used to store confit, jams, jellies, pates and more. They are extremely versatile cabinets because they are usually smaller than a buffet or chest of drawers and can be used for storage in any room. They can easily be converted into powder room vanities, used as nightstands, and even retrofitted with small refrigeration units for bar areas or wine rooms. They make great storage for extra shoes, boots, and keys near the back door. This cabinet is a wonderful example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier.

    Located in Dallas, TX
19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail. Ideal as a bathroom vanity cabinet...
