Tiny Georgian Miniature Delft Wall Hanging Rack

About the Item

An Exceptionally Charming And Rare George III Period Oak Wall Hanging Rack, Or Miniature Delft Rack, In Fabulous Untouched Condition, Of Extremely Unusual Small Proportions Having Attractive Shaped Decoration And Three Drawers To Frieze. This is one of the most charming pieces of Georgian furniture we have owned for quite some time. Its difficult to decide exactly what its original purpose would have been and therefore how best to describe it, but we believe it is just a minature version of a tyical georgian wall hanging rack. When full size these racks are often referred to as delft racks as they were normally filled full of delft porcelain after being mounted on the wall. Actually, aside from just being so charming these little wall shelves could be extremely useful for hanging keys and storing similar small items near the front or back door of any house. They could also be used in a kitchen for spices, or anywhere else around the home just as something beautiful to look at. In terms of condition then it is very much what we would refer to as untouched. Whilst the shelves have been to our restorer for a clean and natural wax polish before being offered for sale, they have been left as much as possible in the condition which we found them. There have been various different hooks installed at different times over many years which has resulted in a few filled holes and the little brass knobs to the drawer fronts have some very minor, slight differences so have clearly been replaced over the years. Overall though the piece is very much structurally sound and the untouched condition is certainly part of its charm. Circa 1800. Height 22.5in. Width 20.5in. Depth 5in.

A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.  There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts. We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items. It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture...
