Early 20th Century Art Deco Oak And Coromandel Amsterdam School Sideboard

About the Item

Early 20th Century Art Deco Oak and Coromandel Amsterdam School Sideboard Available to purchase a rare 20th century Art Deco sideboard made in Oak and Coromandel. The unit consists of a pair of sliding glass front doors to the upper section acting as a display cabinet with three heavy set lined drawers underneath. Each drawer has round brass handles, and the drawers sit in the middle of the unit with cupboard doors on either side. Each cupboard door has matching handles, and the unit sits on Oak feet. The top of the unit has a typical Art Deco style raised back and a breakfront top. The sideboard is finished with panelled sides making this a stylish piece of furniture. Here is some more detail about the fabric and history of the sideboard. What makes this item valuable is the inclusion of Coromandel wood within the item's make-up. The wood is called Coromandel, Calamander or Kalu-Medhiriya. It has been registered with the IUCN( International Union for the Conservation of Nature) as extinct or at least available in such small amounts it is on the verge of extinction. The Amsterdam School of design style (1910 - 1930) is unique in the Netherlands with its expressive and rich forms. The movement started with architecture and included designs for furniture, lamps, clocks, ceramics and textile. Well known designers, including Tine Baanders and Fré Cohen, created collectable pieces during this period. Two variants of the Amsterdam School emerged: the more expressive style with exuberant shapes, deep, contrasting colours and distinct contour lines, and the crisper, more geometric style influenced by the journal Wendingen, the platform of the Amsterdam School. The period's famous furniture designers were Harry Dreesen and Louis Deen, Michel de Klerk, Piet Kramer and Hildo Knop, who worked extensively in the Amsterdam School style. The movement also inspired companies like Metz & Co. Under the influence of these designers, furniture was designed to make a statement. Large in size, eccentric in design while giving the air of exclusivity and wealth. Condition report: Excellent
