Pair of French 19th Century Calacatta Marble Top Giltwood Carved Console Tables

About the Item

An Important Pair of Stately Console Tables In the Louis XVI Manner Constructed in carved and gilded wood; rising from four stop-fluted legs adorned with lotus bud forms and terminating in ionic capitals; having conjoining stylised 'X' form entretoises carved with a guilloche pattern; having centrally situated twin-handled urns; the aprons with scrolling foliate rinceaux and interspersed with paterae, and having arc-en-arbalette shaped Calacatta marble thumbnail-edged platforms. French, Circa 1880 Dimensions: H: 37 in / 93 cm W: 61 in / 154 cm D: 20.5 in / 51 cm A similar giltwood carved table, by the famous cabinetmaker Guillaume Grohé, with guilloche-carved stretchers and a twin-handled vase finial, dating to the mid-nineteenth century, is today in the Château de Chantilly, former home of the French King's son the Duc d'Aumale who was considered one of France's most important collectors and tastemakers.
