Giancarlo Piretti, Platone Folding Desk for Anonima Castelli, 1971

About the Item

One of the most influential Italian designers of the twentieth century, Giancarlo Piretti’s chair designs – for which he is most celebrated – have sold millions worldwide. Piretti’s most well-known piece is the folding Plia chair. The design was first unveiled at the Fiera del Mobile in Milan in 1967 as ‘The symbol of a new era focused on plastic’. Its material combinations of a steel and polypropylene frame, ‘three-disc hinge’ and elegant functionality revolutionised the concept of a folding chair. With sales upward of seven million, Plia has garnered a cult popularity and is now recognised as a significant cornerstone of post-war Italian modern design – nowadays enjoying centre stage in MoMA NY’s design department. The Platone desk was designed to be presented as a set with the Plia chair. It is also held in the permanent collection of the MoMa in NYC. This model remains in great vintage condition, consistent with age and use. Please contact us for more information and for additional shipping quotes.
