A substantial antique French oak monastery / refectory table. circa 1900 Hand carved in France in the early 20th century, likely near the Alps region of Southern France close to the Italian / Swiss border, having an impressive 2.5 inch thick plank tabletop comprised of four boards, rising on a carved and pierced trestle base, cross stretcher with wedged mortise and tenon joinery, resting on sturdy molded shoe feet. Dimensions: (approx) 29.25" High, 79" Long, 31" Wide; Clearance: 26.75" Historically monks used these large tables in dining halls and refectories, hence the name. A refectory table is a highly elongated table used originally for dining in religious halls and monasteries during Medieval times.
