Tecno T69 Table Osvaldo Borsani Eugenio Gerli

About the Item

A classic of Italian design from the 1960s. Round table model T69 with wood top, rare, production Tecno designers Osvaldo Borsani & Eugenio Gerli. The particularity of T69 is the structural base that has a strong graphic character due to the architectural sign referring to the Tecno logo. Eugenio Gerli (Milan, 15 July 1923 - Milan, 2 October 2013) was an Italian architect and designer. During an intense professional career spanning more than six decades, he built villas, apartment blocks, office buildings, factories, banks, shops and restored historic buildings. He often completed his works with custom-made interiors and furniture. This broad spectrum of experience, together with his initial studies in engineering, is the basis for his industrial design projects, many of which are classics today: the S83 chair, the PS 142 Clamis armchair, the Jamaica cabinet, the Graphis office system. Osvaldo Borsani was born in Varedo in Brianza in 1911 into a family of furniture makers with a long and established tradition of craftsmanship. At the age of sixteen, he began working with the Atelier di Varedo, the company founded by his father Gaetano. In 1931, he obtained his diploma of artistic maturity at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. In the same year he enrolled in the first year of the Biennium of Architecture, before graduating in 1936, at the Milan Polytechnic. In 1933 he participated in the 5th Milan Triennale with his project for the Casa minima, which was awarded a silver medal. Borsani's professional physiognomy combines an investigation into the quality of materials with a passion for technology and an interest in creativity and avant-garde artistic experiences. It was this interest that led him, from the post-war period onwards, to forge ties of friendship and professional collaboration with numerous artists, including Lucio Fontana, Agenore Fabbri, Aligi Sassu, Roberto Crippa, Fausto Melotti, Arnaldo and Giò Pomodoro. In 1953, together with his brother Fulgenzio, he founded the Tecno company with the aim of transforming the artisan family business into an industrial reality. The production of special furnishings and customised supplies thus took on a more limited dimension in favour of starting mass production of furniture. To reinforce this approach, in 1968 Osvaldo Borsani with Eugenio Gerli designed the Graphis system, which inaugurated a new way of conceiving work space. In the 1970s, with the expansion of the production lines and industrial spaces, the Centro Progetti Tecno was born, which, under the guidance of Osvaldo Borsani, his daughter Valeria Borsani and her husband Marco Fantoni, extended its design research to various types of buildings of public interest and urban spaces. He died in Milan in 1985.
