Toulouse-Lautrec Color Lithograph, 1896 - La Troupe de Mademoiselle Eglantine

About the Item

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French 1864–1901) lithograph (poster) printed in three colors on machine wove paper. Created 1895. Printed in 1896. Sheet size: 24" 3/8h x 31 1/2"w. Frame size: 40 1/4"h x 47 1/2"w. This original stone lithograph by Toulouse-Lautrec is in excellent condition. is laid on a thin Japon paper and still bears some mild creasing from the original fold lines. It presents in an ornate black and gold leaf frame. This poster was commissioned by the cabaret dancer, Jane Avril, to advertise her appearance in the quadrille, 'Troupe de Mlle Églantine', when they performed at the Palace Theatre in London in 1896. The names of the other dancers appear in the text: Cléopatre, Églantine and Gazelle. Avril was one of the artist's favorite subjects and a good friend. Here Toulouse-Lautrec has captured the energy and movement of the group as they high-kick their way across the stage. The artist employs an economy of detail to build a dynamic composition, positioning the dancers' legs to create a strong diagonal line that draws the viewer's eye across the work to the main text. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose large, colorful posters were a familiar sight in Paris in the 1890s and remain popular to this day, has become a symbol of the Belle Epoque. A man of aristocratic background, he was a constant presence in the popular cafés, concert halls, and brothels of Montmartre as he sought escape from the despair brought on by physical handicaps. He also circulated freely among artists and intellectuals of the day.
