Sterling Native American Indian Trade Arm Bands William Bateman i15638

About the Item

Rare collectible Native American arm bands made from sterling silver by the English Silversmith William Bateman. He is the grandson of the famed silversmith Hester Bateman. That family, and shop, made intricate and collectible silver pieces from the early 1700s all the way into the 19th century. Silver was used in trade back in the 1700's and 1800's by the British to the American Indians for pelts and other precious items not available to them back home. Per the hallmarks, these arm bands date back to 1819. The WB for William Bateman, King George profile as the Duty mark, Lion for sterling and the letter D for the year 1819. These specific bands come with the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom engraved on the front. The Bateman family silver was commonly used in this trade due to its high quality work. Our research leads us to believe these pieces were traded with the Ottawa tribe and were likely worn by one of the chiefs or higher ups of that tribe. Its incredibly rare to come across a matched pair of arm bands still together and even rarer to come from the Bateman family itself. Do not miss a chance at history as most pieces like this can only be found in museums!
