A multi -coloured paste and gilt 'Maltese Cross' brooch, Coro, USA, 1950s.

About the Item

A striking and highly decorative brooch , in the form of a Maltese Cross, designed and manufactured by Coro, in the 1950s. Composed of four large faceted and tapered topaz glass stones, each is surrounded by citrine, topaz and soft grey pastes, with a larger grey paste at the centre of the brooch, all set in a softly gilded metal. Always a classic and highly recognizable motif, this brooch creates a strong and stylish focus or highlight to any coat, jacket or other. Cohn and Rosenberger, better known as ‘Coro’, created a vast array of costume jewellery between 1930 and 1960, being one of the most celebrated and important manufacturers in the United States. Their huge success became very apparent with the arrival of Adolphe Katz, whose ability to select designs that were highly commercial, and to foster designs of great beauty and variety, were outstanding. They went on to produce a high end ‘couture’ line called Vendome, imitating many French designs, and also later made jewellery for Oscar de la Renta.
