Arts and Crafts Cufflinks

ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

The Arts and Crafts movement that emerged in England in the late 19th century saw a dehumanization of design in the rise of industrialization and mass production of objects. Its practitioners prized craftsmanship and a close connection between the artisan and the entire process of what they were making. This included the design of Arts and Crafts jewelry and watches, which evolved as the movement spread to the United States in the early 20th century.

While much of the Arts and Crafts furniture realm was dominated by male designers like William Morris and Gustav Stickley, several women came to prominence in Arts and Crafts jewelry design, including British metalworker Charlotte Newman and American enamelist and metalsmith Elizabeth Copeland. Many creators were part of guilds, encouraging an exchange of ideas, with some focused on jewelry, like England’s Guild and School of Handicraft — founded by Charles Robert Ashbee — and Birmingham Guild of Handicraft.

In contrast to the Victorian era, with its decadent gemstones and heavy mourning jewelry, designers of Arts and Crafts jewelry looked to the past and abroad for inspiration, from simple medieval shapes to East Asian styles. The movement’s emphasis on natural forms overlapped with Art Nouveau. Flourishes like leaves and flowers formed from silver, aluminum and copper can be found in bracelets and necklaces designed in this style, while rings and earrings are adorned with affordable gems such as turquoise and freshwater pearls.

Arts and Crafts jewelry designers used materials that were often simple, such as semiprecious stones and enamel, which is one of the oldest forms of surface decoration. Artisans prioritized the use of artistic techniques to elevate the jewelry rather than expensive components, and every piece was intended to be one of a kind — a work of wearable art.

Cufflinks English Victorian Essex Crystal
Located in Southbury, CT
Carved crystal cabochons are painted on the reverse to portray two little black and white terriers. Perhaps the only thing more wonderful in the world than a pair of carved crystal cufflinks from England depicting man's best friend is a pair of carved crystal cufflinks from England depicting man's best friend in a beastly mood. Which is why I laugh every time I look at these cufflinks. From a distance, they're quite sophisticated. Perfectly appropriate for a weekend at Balmoral, should you ever receive an invitation. Only upon closer inspection can you see the tiny little frowns on each dog's face. In addition, the eyes look wide open in shock or alarm, as if the food bowl has inexplicably levitated from the floor and is now hovering above the refrigerator, entirely out of reach. The crystals have a diameter of approximately 15.66 mm and the gold toggles 25.64 mm long by 5.96 mm at their widest point, so these cufflinks should fit a range of different-sized holes. I live with three dogs myself so I am admittedly biased, but these antique English cufflinks are, I think, maybe the greatest pair of cufflinks ever created. They even come in their original box. Made near 1860, the cufflinks are hallmarked "WJH." The 18K metal fineness mark and other assay marks are less legible. The fact that these cufflinks have remained with their original and quite clever (you'll see when you remove the 'links) case is surely one of the reasons they are in such fine condition. I have passed on so many pairs of canine and equestrian-themed Essex crystal...

Child and Child Arts & Crafts Enamel Heart Shape Cufflinks
Located in London, GB
A Child & Child, Arts & Crafts movement, pair of enamel heart shape cufflinks, with mottled green and blue guilloche enamel, over an engine turned design, with a central heart, with a sunburst surround and radiating dashes. Mounted in silver-upon-gold, with chain links and maker's marks. Made in London, England, 1890-1901. The mark features a sunflower with two Cs for brothers Walter Child (1840-1930) and the younger Harold Child (1848-1915). In 1878 they had inherited a fortune from their father, a London pawnbroker, and they used this to set up their own manufacturing firm. Their business was established at 1 Seville Street, Knightsbridge, in 1880. They registered their maker’s mark with Goldsmiths Hall as silver plate workers. By 1892 the firm had moved to 35 Alfred Place West (now Thurloe Street). It wasn’t until they moved to this address that they began to make the artistic jewellery for became known. They created gem-set jewellery in both traditional and revivalist styles but it is their Arts and Crafts enamel and silver pieces that are most renowned. Bright shades of green, turquoise and blue enamel are hallmarks of their work. Designs frequently featured wings, leaves, feathers, hearts and butterflies on brooches, pendants and buckles. Sometimes the enamel work was the only source of colour in a piece, other times it was combined with gemstones as in the beautiful brooch set with a large amethyst encircled by a vivid green enamel snake which is now part of the Victorian & Albert Museum collection. The firm attracted a wide circle of clients including Pre-Raphaelite artists such as William Holman Hunt and Sir Edward Burne-Jones for whom the firm often created jewels to his own personal designs. The celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens was another well-known client who commissioned the firm to make pieces for him, such as the ebony, silver and pearl crucifix he designed as a gift for his wife-to-be whilst they were courting. The partnership was dissolved in 1899. The firm continued under the same name, in the ownership of Harold Child, until his death in 1915. In 1913 the firm listed amongst its patrons, the late Queen Victoria, the late King Edward VII, King George V, the late Empress Frederick of...
