Vintage Bulgari Trombino Ring Sapphire Diamond Gold 18k Estate Jewelry

About the Item

An iconic Bulgari Trombino ring made of 18k gold, featuring sapphire and diamond. The Trombino ring is one of the most recognizable among Bulgari’s designs. The name derives from the Italian word for "little trumpet," reflecting the ring's unique shape, which resembles the mouthpiece of a trumpet. The design of the Trombino ring was first introduced by Bulgari in the 1930s. Typically, the Trombino ring features a center gemstone surrounded by smaller accent stones. As to this particular ring, the center stone is a gorgeous four-prong set cabochon sapphire. The broad shank is encrusted with round cut diamonds and a row of horizontally graduated baguette cut diamonds. The stones taper down from the central gemstone. This design creates a perfect placement for the sapphire. Over the years, the Trombino ring has become a symbol of luxury and glamour. The cabochon’s bombe shape resembles Rome's domed rooftops. This statement piece with the vivid colored gem is a hallmark of Bulgari style. This classy vintage ring is made of 18 karat yellow gold, cabochon sapphire and round diamonds. The sapphire measures 10.79 x 8.49 x 5.70 mm and weighs 4.92 carats (engraved inside the shank). The diamonds are round brilliant cut and baguette cut (F-G color, VS clarity, total weight approximately 2.0 carats). The ring top measures 5/8" x 1/2" x 3/8" (1.8 x 1.3 x 0.8 cm). The Trombino ring weighs 8.8 grams. The vintage Trombino ring is stamped with Bvlgari maker's mark, sapphire carat weight, hallmark for 18 karat gold. The ring is size 5.75 - 6. It is not re-sizable, but can be sized a little bit close to its original size. About Vintage Jewelry: Vintage jewelry is a broad topic with multiple aspects to discuss. We decided to answer a few basic questions to provide a broad introduction to this captivating subject. So, what defines vintage jewelry? Why is it so appealing? And how does one navigate the optimal way to buy vintage jewelry online? In the industry, different sellers and makers have different opinions regarding the specific time frames characterizing the creation of vintage jewels. Here at Nadine Krakov, our definition places vintage within the bracket of anything produced between 50 and 100 years ago. Consequently, we label all jewelry crafted from 1930 to 1980 as vintage. This time frame comprises Art Deco, Retro and Mid-Century styles. Why do we love vintage jewelry so much? It’s all about the quality of making and, of course, the aesthetic. Vintage pieces were mostly made by hand or at least hand-finished while modern jewels are mainly cast. As the lifestyle back in the days was much slower, jewelry makers literally had more time on their hands. Skilled craftsmen honed their craft and reputation. They couldn’t allow a flimsy, poorly done piece to ruin that. Mass market jewelry didn’t exist at that time. Each little detail of a piece was executed thoughtfully and with high quality in mind.

In vintage jewelry design, turquoise holds a special place. The name “turquoise” came from the French pierre tourques and translates as a “Turkish stone.” The mineral was first transported to the west through Turkey from mines in the historical Khorasan province of Iran (Persia) and Afghanistan. Pre-Columbian Native Americans mined the stone throughout nowadays. In all these cultures turquoise was considered as a protective stone for warriors and symbolized the connection to heaven. In the 17th century wearing turquoise jewelry was a must for a well-dressed gentleman. The stone was popular to the point when all the emeralds in the crown that Napoleon I gave Empress Marie Louise were replaced with Persian turquoise cabochons. Today Persian turquoise is beloved by jewelry aficionados for its warm, calming color. It may vary from sky-blue to green. As to the dark veins, it depends on your preferences and a certain piece. Some jewelry collectors prefer turquoise with a web pattern of matrix as it adds character to a piece. The versatility of turquoise allows it to be used in various designs. Smooth cabochon cut turquoise is a common choice for vintage jewelry. Beadwork is also a popular technique that showcases turquoise's unique color. Turquoise is often associated with the American Southwest, where Native American artisans have been using the stone for centuries. Vintage turquoise jewelry...

Most antique rings were created by skilled artisans who meticulously handcrafted each piece. This level of craftsmanship allowed for intricate designs that were often time-consuming to produce. This includes filigree work, hand-chasing, granulation (tiny metal bead-work), and hand-piercing to create delicate openwork patterns. The emphasis on hand-made production is a hallmark of the era’s jewels. Antique rings were typically made from both gold and silver. The jewelers noticed that diamonds look whiter when set in white metal and not in yellow. The white gold was not invented back then yet and platinum was too hard for jewelry tools...
